I found a need for only one but have included the extra in photos. There are two electrical cords leading into the back of light source. This unit also mysteriously came with two mounting rings. My experience and these photos suggest that a filter is not essential.
It is labeled Thermos cord. It will also be in the shipping box for next owner. This is an alternative light source for a Beseler 4x5 r. In my use with the naked bulb it seemed to yield a uniform light source as is.
The difference is hard to define. This unit did not come to me with a filter. I found it to yield a smoother image with different characteristics from my incandescent condenser light source. For this listing I took a few images of the bulb when plugged in.
The two stop underexposed image shows configuration of naked bulb one under exposure showed mounts and connections in a smoothly lighted field normal gave smooth, uniform, light which is what I experienced with it using no filter. I changed the exposure of 3 different shots by one stop each. It is supposed to assure a more even lighting of the negative. One of its reputed virtues for which I got it is reduced visibility dust and scratches on the negative contrast making preferable some portraiture.
One is for the bulb itself other grounded timing control switching. Often a translucent filter is shown in front of this light source.
